You watch what you eat. You avoid overeating. And yet every evening your belly is bloated like a balloon. In the morning it's fine. But by the afternoon you have to unbutton your pants.

What exactly is the thyroid belly?

Why traditional diets don't work

If your bloated stomach is linked to your thyroid, cutting calories won't fix the problem. Worse: too severe calorie restriction can worsen thyroid slowdown.

This is what the functional doctors we work with constantly remind us: your body interprets restriction as a signal of famine and further reduces thyroid hormone production to conserve energy. It's a vicious cycle. I've been through it myself — the less I ate, the more bloated and tired I became.

Similarly, laxatives are too aggressive, intestinal cleanses only have a temporary effect, and intensive cardio can increase stress on your adrenals.
